An Up-Close Look at Hands and Book Pages.
If it isn't good enough, you aren't close enough. - Bruce Gilden, Magnum Photographer

The Hands and Clothing sub-series is an ongoing project to photograph the gestures of people's hands and their relationship to the clothing when isolated from all other surroundings.
I was in Tokyo doing a workshop with magnum photographer Bruce Gilden.
Bruce Gilden is known for working very close.
He lives by a re-write of a famous Robert Capa quote that says "If it isn't good enough, you aren't close enough."
Gilden says, "I'm known for taking pictures close. And the older I get, the closer I get".
This statement is not a fib.
Gilden's most recent series, "Faces" is his first set of colour portraits.
At 68, although he's still quick, he chose to explore a different idea. It's hard to be around a photo demi-god (in my book) and not, as a 20 year old guy, become very quickly influenced.
And I guess that the tight frame of some of the shots - the hands in particular - are the result of studying under Gilden - even if it was for four days and a few meals.
I think I'm becoming comfortable controlling the frame and I need to learn to let things breathe, but before I can do that I seem to be working close and trying to keep it tight.
